Orpington Folk Club celebrates 40th birthday 19th May 2005
On 19th May 2005 Orpington Folk Club celebrated its 40th birthday. Over
70 people attended. To Mark the occasion as many guests, ex-resident singer/musicians, organisers
and members of the club were invited. Some coming from as far a field as Somerset
and Buckinghamshire. Ross Barlow who was there on that first night performed a song he had
especially written for the occasion entitled,
When
Ralph McTell Played Orpington
After the interval a 40th birthday cake made by Ted Handley was ceremonially
cut by him and Ivan North. Terry Sparkes one of the founder members gave a short speech. He explained how he, Chris Andrews and Kevin McCabe started the club and how surprised they
were that night, when over 200 people turned up at the 'Royal Oak', Green St Green. Terry
commented how, "There was no one there over the age of thirty". Our thanks go to all those who entertained us at the celebration
and to those who came just to listen, reminisce and meet old friends
.
