The Foxglove Trio: Like Diamond Glances
The Foxglove Trio is a group of multi-instrumentalists who perform mostly traditional songs from around the British Isles in English and Welsh. The trio comprises Ffion Mair (vocals, whistle), Patrick Dean (melodeon, cello, backing vocals) and Cathy Mason (cello, guitar).
This is an EP with 5 tracks. Newry Town is the well known highwayman song. Cariad Cyntaf and Bugeilio’r Gwyn are in Welsh. I hadn’t heard The Sign of the Bonny Blue Bell before. It’s an ‘as I roved out type song’. Betsy Bell & Mary Grey tells the story of a delivery boy who courts two girls but they die of the plague! It’s followed by Morrison's Jig.
Their arrangements are very good and Ffion sings with passion. Full details are on the web site.
