The Fisherman’s Friend’s: One and All
Fisherman's Friends are a male shanty singing group from Port Isaac in Cornwall. Their debut album sold over 150,000 copies and One and All is the follow up. The singers are: John Brown, Julian Brown, Jeremy Brown (these first three being brothers), Trevor Grills, John Lethbridge, Billy Hawkins, Nigel Sherratt, Peter Rowe, John McDonnell and Jon Cleave.
Sadly on 9 February 2013 a heavy steel door fell while at a gig in Guildford, killing their tour manager Paul McMullen. Singer Trevor Grills suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital two days later. The tragedies have put the whole future of the group in doubt. The album and the single Mary Anne, taken from it were released in memory of Trevor.
One and All features several guest instrumentalists including John McCusker (fiddle), Michael McGoldrick (flutes etc), Andy Cutting (melodeon) and Leo Abraham (guitars).
There are plenty of shanties on the CD – Yeller Girls, Nelson’s Blood, John Kanaka, and Sally Brown. All have instrumentation and strong choruses. One I hadn’t heard before is probably the most successful - Rattlin’ Winches. Among the other tracks Steve Knightley’s Cousin Jack and Mary Anne are particularly effective.
