Capercaillie

Grace and Pride (Survival Records SURCD 030)

This double CD has been released to celebrate their 20th anniversary. It has 38 titles with over 150 minutes of music and contains previously unreleased and deleted tracks. This is backed up by with a 20-page colour booklet. Two founder members are present throughout the lifetime of the group. Donald Shaw (accordion and keyboards) and Karen Matheson on vocals. Over the years there have been 13 other members (on fiddle, guitar, bass, drums, pipes) and a number of guest musicians.Strangely for anthology they start in 2003 and go back to 1995 on CD I. CD2 starts in 1994 and ends in 1984. The format they use is a miscellany of songs (obviously featuring Karen's voice) sung in both English and Gaelic and traditionally based tunes (mainly jigs and reels). Included is my favourite 'Miracle of Being' from 1994. Capercaillie is a world-class folk band and if you haven’t got any of their recordings then this would be a good introduction.
