Dave Gibb

Speed of the Plough (Porn's Records POMCDO3)

Dave Gibb is a Scottish singer - songwriter and this is his second album. (His first was released in 1999). His voice is pleasant and he accompanies himself on guitar (either strummed or finger picked). Occasionally he double tracks the vocal.
His songs cover a range of topics, from Mary Queen of Scots to life as a Mississippi gambler, but my favourite has to be 'Princess Mitzy'. This concerns a dog that passes comment on a drunk in the gutter in true doggie style. The accompaniment has echoes of The Kinks ('Sunny Afternoon). In the main though, I found his songs did not reach me. He includes the Burns classic 'Green Grow the Rashes' and the contrast is startling.
